If you’re a fan of nail art, the changing of seasons is the perfect time to try out some fresh new looks. Although we have our go-to autumn nail colors ready to go (special shout out to our fave burgundy nail paints), we consulted with manicure experts to find out what else is on the horizon.
We got the dirt on this season’s trendy nail art from four industry insiders. The best part is that you can create many of these looks on your own with only a few simple tools, some fresh nail paint hues, and some textured topcoats.

The double-corner french
Choi’s customers have been asking for a unique take on the classic French manicure. “Customers frequently request variants of this, with little updates such as a non-traditional color scheme (not simply pink and white) or colored piping on the tips. Manicures with negative space, diagonal or two-toned tips, and ombré designs are other popular requests, “…she explains.

Completely matte
Expert nail artist and CEO of Jinsoon in New York City, Jin Soon Choi, thinks that come fall, people will move away from super-shiny manicures and toward matte effects because of the need for change.
Matte colorful variety
Brittney Boyce, who founded Nails of LA and is a famous nail stylist, thinks the multicolor matte manicure will become increasingly popular. Boyce thinks this is a great method for doing nail art at home on the cheap. It’s perfect for those who can’t decide on a single shade of polish for their fingertips.
Mismatched topcoats
Boyce encourages newcomers to the nail painting world to try out a variety of finishes in their creations. She suggests experimenting with contrasting matte and glossy topcoats, such as a matte base with a glossy tip.
Contemporary french
The experts at our company all agreed that French manicures are making a strong comeback. Lisa Logan, proprietor of The Nail Suite in Harlem, New York, and a consulting manicurist for Nails.Inc praises the designs’ simplicity while praising their versatility. Boyce agrees and recommends the almond shape with a deeper color at the tip for individuals with longer nails, while the painted curve might be fun for those with shorter nails.
French ombré
The aforementioned image exemplifies the ombré-French design, which may be achieved by a wide variety of color gradients. to combine this you need to learn how to do ombre nails.
DIY designs
Motivated by the work of your favorite Instagram nail artist? Are you more of a freehand artist? Choi thinks you should do it! She explains, “With a little skill and the edge of your nail paintbrush, you can create most patterns.” She recommends a clean makeup sponge or a toothpick as starter tools for do-it-yourself nail art. Our experts agree that if you’re ready to advance to the next level, you should invest in a set of fine paintbrushes and dotting tools.
Kitty cat tips
These Halloween-appropriate claw-like nail designs are inspired by feline claws. This manicure looks best on longer nails, but it may also be done with nail extensions. It’s a little more difficult to do it yourself, but if you have nail extensions, it’s a killer style, adds Boyce.

Celebrity manicurist and creator Mazz Hanna forecasts that “the nail art for this season will be unlike any other mostly because it will be DIY.” At-home nail artists may experiment with the season’s color palette and gain experience by creating simple patterns on the tips of their fingers.
Tonal ombré
A tonal ombré manicure, in which two or more colors are used on a single nail, is more popular than multi-colored manicures, Logan has seen. This style may take you from autumn to winter with ease, much like the changing of the seasons (or your next manicure appointment).
Negative-space manicures
“Nail art, namely Negative Space Nail Art, is becoming increasingly popular at New York Fashion Week, as Choi explains. I think we’ll see a lot more basic, simple nail art, like the design we did for Proenza Schouler [one seasoncollection].”
Polka Dots
In a similar vein, Hanna thinks polka dots will be huge again. “It’s incredibly simple to execute with a bobby pin, even with minimal nail art knowledge, and you can use any seasonal color that is current,” she says. So it’s not possible to speed things up. As Hanna warns, “Polka dots often take longer to cure,” so be sure the dots are totally dry before adding the topcoat. “The polka dots may slide if you apply the topcoat too soon.” This can lead to redos of this do-it-yourself design.
The color palette is called “ombré”
If you want to DIY the multi-nail ombré effect, sticking to the same color family makes it easier. It’s simple, yet it still makes a big statement,” Hanna agrees.

Boyce is a gel extension expert, so it comes as no surprise that he loves the current glass nail trend. ‘It’s a sleek design that works with anything,’ she says. This is more difficult to do on your own, but it looks so professional with nail extensions!
