Pedicures are one of life’s great joys. A full stop follows the period in this sentence. Nothing is more relaxing or intimate than having a stranger massage and caring for your feet. And now, with summer beauty visits at the top of my to-do list, I’m wishing for pedicure nail art rather than a basic coat of paint during my 45-minute pedicure instead of a simple layer of paint. That’s right – in my view, fingers have dominated the world of nail art for far too much time, and it’s now time for toes to take back their rightful place atop the throne.
To begin, let’s consider this question: which location has a greater percentage of undeveloped land that might be used as a testing ground for novel architectural concepts? It’s possible that I’ve simply been unfortunate, but I’ve never encountered a lady who is interested in nail painting and whose thumbs are larger than her big toes. Perhaps I’ve just been unlucky. And to tell you the truth, even though some people may believe that the world of options for pedi designs is limited to the daisies with gemstone accents that were popular in the 1990s (which are still fantastic, don’t come for me), the truth is that they simply haven’t encountered an artist who has a vision for pedicure art. The pedicure has gradually gained a place
The demand for press-on nail designs and manicure wraps has led to an increase in the variety of designs that can be applied to toenails, and notable brands that provide these products include ManiMe and NodSpark. Eugenia Ye-Yeo, the founder and owner of NodSpark, told me that the firm did not initially give alternatives to pedicures but that in 2020, in response to public demand, they started creating the nail wraps (with delicate flower and fruit patterns, both of which I very much need for summer). “We found that pedicure consumers constitute a different market since not everyone wears a manicure all the time; as a result,” she notes of the popularity of the pedicures, “not everyone always wears a manicure.” That is exactly how I felt about it.
But I see that not everyone is into bringing up their toes, especially because nobody will see your pedicure if you’re not wearing socks or shoes. Why go to the trouble or expense (unless you happen to be in Florida, where I’ve gotten some of the best pedicures of my life)? If you want to keep your mani-pedi on the simple side, this might seem like a waste of time and effort, but for those who enjoy going all out with their nail art, this could be the next big thing. Even if you can’t get long acrylics or gel nails on your feet the way you can on your hands (and if you can, please get in touch with me ASAP because I have questions), you still have ten toes that are calling for something more exciting than a plain red or nubby polish.
To some who believe that an embellished toe is superfluous, I would like to remind them that toe rings were a significant fad in the early 2000s. Underestimating the possibilities for fashion below the ankles is a mistake that should never be made. Maybe it’s just my inner millennial longing for the carefree days of her youth, replete with all the colorful, flashy, and needless aesthetics she ditched in favor of athleisure and natural, unpainted nails this past year. Maybe it’s just me. Maybe it’s both.
Is getting a manicure for a beauty editor the same as having the want to show off your tall stilettos now that you can spend time with your loved ones again? Perhaps. Or is it just an extreme case of longing for the years between the 1990s and the 2000s? Yeah, and a significant part of that has to do with the general state of the culture as a whole. Because I got my belly button pierced when it was in style (and felt so confined that there weren’t many fashionable choices to ignite joy), I have no qualms about having a pedicure with anything from a simple half-moon to a complex squiggle and negative space design. I’ve already decided to get my belly button pierced in response to the comeback of that trend in fashion. A stunning bouquet; the options are limitless!
Pedicure nail art is the pinnacle of aesthetics for the sake of aesthetics. In a period when people’s budgets did not have many places for such luxury, wearing a rhinestone on your toe was the height of impracticality, and I cannot think of a finer example of this.

Now that summer has here and my sandal collection is in desperate need of some TLC, you can hardly blame me for adopting a more carefree attitude toward my toes.
